A Visit To See What Luxembourg Is All About

The Adventure

My adventure in Luxembourg began early in the morning after arriving at the train station in the middle of the city. Luxembourg was one city in my travels that I especially knew very little about. Signs around the station and city told me that it was a French-speaking area, which was good, because I am able to get by in French. As usual, I wandered aimlessly around the city. In December, the city was very well-decorated for the holiday season. In addition to the usual impressive churches, statues, and government buildings, the center of Luxembourg was adorned with festive ornaments. A massive Christmas tree and some large holiday art displayed not too far from the train station were just a few of the things I saw. Besides the Christmas decorations, of course, the usual European-style architecture everywhere I walked was also impressive. I stumbled upon a really nice looking church, a government building, and many other photo-worthy buildings in Luxembourg.

Highlight

I came across the highlight of my trip completely by accident. While I was waiting for a store to open, I wandered around for the time that I had to wait. I ended up on a bridge and realized that much of the city was raised above the river below. By the river, there was a small picturesque church, and many other buildings. It felt like I was seeing a whole new city underneath the one I had already explored. The bridge itself featured a few ruins that stood out from the rest of the architecture I had seen so far. In the distance, a similarly-styled arched bridge for a train crossed over the small valley. It seemed like there were some guided tours available for this area, including maybe some sort of underground area? They weren’t available at the time I visited, so if I ever return, it will be to explore that area more thoroughly.

Cost

Other than transportation costs, I only spent €5.10 ($7.73 CAD) in Luxembourg. This included a souvenir flag, and if I remember correctly, I picked up some snacks at the same store.

Concluding Thoughts

I thought Luxembourg was probably the most underrated place I visited. Though it doesn’t have any major, large tourist attractions, the overall vibe is very similar to a lot of the other European cities I have visited. Despite its smaller size, there is definitely still enough to see and do for a little while. I definitely wouldn’t say no to returning, and I hope to be able to explore more of the city next time.
