The Adventure
The last stop in my 2023 summer adventures was in Copenhagen (København), Denmark. After a busy week of travels, we made our first activity taking a nap. Apparently the long train from Paris wasn’t sufficient to get a decent rest, at least not for my first time sleeping on trains. Afterwards, we took the city by foot. One of the first things we explored was the canals, which the city is known for. The water passageways are lined by beautiful and colourful houses that remind me of maritime Canada. It seems like these bright and cheery buildings are a trend in waterside cities. From there, we walked up the water towards the popular Little Mermaid statue. There were definitely a lot of people by the statue, and it was hard to get close for a bit.
A cool feature of Copenhagen is a star-shaped man-made island with a castle on it. Our journey took us there next, where we found more colourful buildings, cannons, and an old windmill. We settled in a park just across the moat for lunch, and had great views of both the castle and the park’s nature as we ate. We walked down the street from there and came across a cool orthodox church, and, right close to it, the spectacular Marble Church. The Marble Church is a beautiful church, and I would absolutely recommend checking it out if you’re ever in Copenhagen.

We then made our way to another park, filled with gardens and statues. In the centre of the park was the Rosenborg Castle. It had cool unsymmetrical towers with copper roofs and small details down its walls.
One of our last stops was the Lego store. We didn’t get anything, but since Lego is a Danish toy that had been a huge part of my childhood, it felt very necessary to stop in. This was the first stop of a few in our walk around central Copenhagen until we ended up underneath the Round Tower with sausages for dinner. After one more pass by the canals, we returned to the hotel and prepared for our trip across the bay to Malmö, Sweden, where I would make my home for the next five months.
Highlight
I think the highlight of Copenhagen has to be the canals. It’s such an iconic feature of the city, and it’s so nice to be by the water, surrounded by colourful Waterfront shops and restaurants. Taking in the city from by the water was great, as the city also has several churches with unique steeples that you can see from a distance as you’re taking in the sights. On my next visit to Copenhagen, I would definitely make sure to stop by some of these churches. One day simply was not enough to take in everything Copenhagen has to offer!
Concluding Thoughts
Definitely visit Copenhagen! I myself already have plans to revisit, and I would highly recommend others do too. The city has so much to offer, from canals lined with colourful buildings to beautiful parks to impressive churches.
